Samos, located close to the Turkish coastline, remains a significant entry point for migrants seeking refuge in Europe, with more than 50,000 arriving in Greece by boat this year alone, making it the second most frequented route after Italy. Although migrant arrivals had seen a decline in recent months, renewed increases have been reported since summer, according to the UN refugee agency (UNHCR). Since the beginning of the year, around 160,000 migrants have reached European shores, with 2,000 lives lost or missing during the perilous journey; notably, children comprise approximately 23% of these arrivals.

In light of these tragedies, ongoing efforts to address human trafficking and support migrants continue to be crucial as the region grapples with the complex challenges of migration.
