Russia launched a massive overnight attack on Ukraine's southern and central regions, authorities said, as Kyiv struck Russian oil refineries.

One woman was killed in Zaporizhzhia and 28 people were injured - including three children - according to local officials.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Moscow launched over 500 drones and 45 missiles, hitting 14 regions across the country.

Following the attack, Russia's defence ministry stated that all targets of the strike have been achieved and designated objects have been hit.

This comes amid ongoing international efforts to secure peace, just days after Ukraine experienced one of the largest aerial assaults of the war, resulting in at least 23 fatalities.

In Dnipropetrovsk, Governor Serhiy Lysak cautioned the public to take cover due to a massive attack. This marks the second consecutive night of targeting in the region, with earlier reports indicating Russian military incursions.

Railway infrastructure near Kyiv was damaged, while central and southeastern Ukraine bore the brunt of the latest strikes. Emergency services were engaged in firefighting efforts in Zaporizhzhia amidst explosions reported in Dnipro and Pavlohrad.

In retaliation, Ukraine's military claimed it struck oil refineries in Krasnodar and Syzran, with reports of multiple explosions noted.

Russian authorities acknowledged the drone strikes on its facilities but confirmed no casualties. The Russian defence ministry also reported intercepting 20 Ukrainian drones, including over Crimea.

This escalation coincides with US-led diplomatic initiatives aimed at resolving the war, which remain stalled. Zelensky emphasized the need for actions beyond rhetoric, urging sanctions on Russia.

European foreign affairs ministers are convening in Denmark to address the situation in Ukraine, with discussions about freezing approximately €210 billion of Russian assets and proposals for sanctions intended to hinder Russia's warfare capabilities.

France announced intentions to propose new sanctions aimed at degrading resources funding the war efforts.
