### Celebrations Erupt in Dharamshala as Dalai Lama Turns 90

Thousands gather in India's Himalayan town to celebrate the Tibetan spiritual leader's milestone anniversary.

The Dalai Lama's birthday is a symbol of hope and peace amid ongoing struggles for Tibetan autonomy.

On Sunday, thousands of Tibetan Buddhists flocked to Dharamshala, India, braving heavy monsoon rains to celebrate the Dalai Lama's 90th birthday. The revered spiritual leader, dressed in traditional robes with a flowing yellow wrap, appeared joyful, aided by two monks as he greeted his followers. The vibrant celebrations featured traditional chants resonating through hilltop temples, alongside dynamic performances from dance troupes playing cymbals and bagpipes. Attendees included Indian ministers, devout followers, and notable figures like actor Richard Gere, who expressed profound joy in acknowledging the Dalai Lama's extraordinary life.

As celebrations unfolded, Gere took the stage to commemorate the occasion, speaking affectionately about the Dalai Lama's embodiment of selflessness and wisdom. Sunday marked the conclusion of a week-long series of prayers honoring the Tibetan leader, with festivities aligning with his birthday on the Tibetan lunar calendar. At an earlier ceremony, the Dalai Lama reassured fans of his robust health, humorously predicting he would live to 130 years old—twenty years longer than previous forecasts.

Despite typically avoiding personal celebrations, the Dalai Lama expressed gratitude for the opportunity to inspire a collective reflection on promoting compassion and peace. He described himself as a "simple Buddhist monk" with no regrets as he entered this new decade of life. "Material development is important, but cultivating a good heart and compassion is vital," he shared with his audience.

A significant announcement during the festivities clarified the future of the Dalai Lama's legacy: he will have a successor, addressing long-standing uncertainties regarding the continuation of the 600-year-old institution. According to Tibetan traditions, his reincarnation occurs after death, essential to the community's spiritual customs. Yet, this declaration reignites concerns over the potential influence of the Chinese government in selecting a successor, given their claim to authority over Tibetan affairs.

Living in exile since fleeing Chinese rule in 1959, the Dalai Lama remains a beacon for the Tibetan diaspora, advocating for autonomy amidst China's ongoing dominance. In a show of respect, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the Dalai Lama as an "enduring symbol of love, compassion, patience, and moral discipline", while former US President Barack Obama referred to him as "the youngest 90-year-old I know," reflecting on their longstanding friendship. As the celebrations conclude, the profound significance of the Dalai Lama's teachings resonates in the hearts of his followers, instilling hope for their future struggles.
