Devastating Earthquake Strikes Tibet, Leaving Many Casualties
A 7.1 magnitude earthquake hits Shigatse, Tibet, causing significant destruction and loss of life.
A significant earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale struck Tibet’s Shigatse city early Tuesday morning, claiming the lives of at least 32 people and injuring 38 others, according to reports from Chinese state media. The tremor, occurring at approximately 09:00 local time (01:00 GMT), had a shallow depth of 10 kilometers (six miles), with numerous aftershocks following the initial quake, as recorded by the U.S. Geological Survey.
The impact of the earthquake was felt beyond Tibet, reaching neighboring regions in Nepal and parts of India. Shigatse, revered as one of Tibet's holiest cities and the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama—a key spiritual figure in Tibetan Buddhism—was particularly affected. There were reports of over 1,000 homes sustaining damage, with several buildings collapsing in the strong aftershocks, as captured in various social media posts.
In their reports, Chinese state media initially estimated the earthquake's magnitude at 6.8, noting that it caused significant tremors that were "obvious" to those in the region. Expert Jiang Haikun from the China Earthquake Networks Center indicated that while the likelihood of increasingly severe earthquakes is considered low, aftershocks around magnitude 5 cannot be ruled out.
The Chinese air force has mobilized to provide immediate rescue efforts, deploying drones to assist in the affected areas, which lie at the base of Mount Everest and are currently experiencing below-freezing temperatures. These harsh weather conditions combined with the earthquake have resulted in widespread disruption, including the loss of power and water supplies to the region.
In neighboring Nepal, however, local officials in the Namche area near Everest reported that while tremors were felt, no damages or casualties had occurred. The Tibet earthquake bureau has acknowledged challenges in verifying casualty figures due to ongoing assessments in the aftermath of this catastrophic event.
Tibet's geological landscape, situated on a major fault line created by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, is known for its frequent seismic activity. This devastating tremor echoes memories of the 2015 earthquake near Kathmandu, Nepal, which caused immense destruction, claiming nearly 9,000 lives and injuring over 20,000. As the situation continues to unfold, rescue and recovery efforts remain a top priority in the region.
