Calls for Ceasefire: Trump Mediates Thailand-Cambodia Border Clashes
Amid escalating tensions and a rising death toll, Trump urges immediate ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia to pave the way for trade dialogues.
In a recent appeal for peace amidst rising tensions, President Donald Trump announced his discussions with leaders from both Thailand and Cambodia, aiming for an immediate ceasefire following violent border clashes. During a private visit to his golf courses in Scotland, Trump shared on Truth Social that both countries have committed to urgently convene and establish a ceasefire, ultimately leading to lasting peace.
The hostilities, which ignited on July 24, have already resulted in the deaths of at least 33 soldiers and civilians, displacing thousands along the border. Trump emphasized the importance of halting the violence before any trade negotiations can commence, particularly as US tariffs on goods from both countries are set to take effect on August 1, imposing a hefty 36% tax unless an agreement is reached.
Earlier in the day, Cambodia had reiterated its call for a swift cessation of hostilities. Thailand's foreign minister, Maris Sangiampongsa, stressed the need for Cambodia to demonstrate "genuine sincerity" in resolving the conflict to move forward with discussions.
As the stakes rise, Trump conveyed optimism for resuming trade talks with the countries once stability is restored, stating, "When all is done, and peace is at hand, I look forward to concluding our Trading Agreements with both!"
