Euphoria's star shares his diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, highlighting hope and family support.
Eric Dane, known for his performances in HBO's Euphoria and Grey's Anatomy, has disclosed his diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurodegenerative condition. In a candid interview with People, the 52-year-old actor expressed gratitude for his family's unwavering support as they navigate this new chapter together.
“I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to the set of Euphoria next week,” Dane shared, noting his desire for privacy as he manages the effects of the illness.
Dane portrays Cal Jacobs, the patriarch in the critically acclaimed series Euphoria, which is scheduled to resume filming for its third season shortly. Before his role in Euphoria, he captured audiences as Dr. Mark Sloan in Grey's Anatomy, and had notable characters in Charmed and The Last Ship. Beyond TV, he also appeared in notable films such as Marley & Me and Burlesque. Dane is married to actress and model Rebecca Gayheart, and together, they share two children.
Understanding ALS is crucial, as it represents a group of conditions characterized by the degeneration of motor neurons. As per the NHS, nearly 90% of motor neurone disease patients are diagnosed with the mixed form known as ALS, also referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Symptoms often begin with muscle weakness or twitching in the limbs and can progress to affecting speech and mobility. Tragically, as there is currently no cure for ALS, life expectancy post-diagnosis generally ranges from three to five years, though some patients may live significantly longer.
As Eric Dane bravely faces his diagnosis, his story sheds light on the personal battles of those living with ALS and emphasizes the importance of support from loved ones.
