South Korean Police Scrutinize Japanese Woman Over K-Pop Idol Incident
A possible sexual harassment case unfolds as authorities investigate a woman who kissed BTS star Jin without consent during a fan event.
The South Korean police have summoned a Japanese woman for questioning following allegations that she kissed Jin, a member of the globally renowned K-pop group BTS, without his consent during a public event held in Seoul last year. The incident took place in June 2024 at a gathering commemorating Jin’s discharge from South Korea’s military service.
Footage from the event went viral, showing Jin visibly uncomfortable when various female fans attempted to kiss him. Following the incident, a formal complaint was lodged on a government website, prompting authorities to investigate the matter further. Utilizing assistance from Japanese police, the Songpa police station in southern Seoul has identified the Japanese woman involved, yet her name has not been disclosed.
According to police statements, if the woman agrees to the summons, she will be questioned regarding potential charges of sexual harassment. The police have not indicated what actions may be taken if she chooses not to comply.
Local news outlets report that the woman, in her 50s, has made claims online about the experience, remarking on the sensation of kissing Jin’s “soft” skin. Meanwhile, Hybe, the agency managing BTS, has not yet provided a response to requests for comment on the situation.
Despite historical tensions stemming from Japan’s colonial rule in Korea during the early 20th century, the two nations engage in substantial cultural exchanges, particularly through K-pop and Korean dramas, which continue to attract Japanese visitors to South Korea.
BTS has garnered a vast international following dubbed the “BTS Army.” As all eligible South Korean males, the seven members of BTS are mandated to complete military service, leading to a temporary hiatus for one of the world's most successful music acts. Jin, who is 32 years old, was the first of the group to join the military in 2022, with plans for the band’s return anticipated this year as its members complete their service obligations.
