Judge Arrested for Alleged Role in 2014 Disappearance of 43 Students in Mexico

A retired judge in Mexico, Lambertina Galeana Marín, has been arrested on suspicion of destroying crucial evidence linked to the disappearance of 43 students in 2014. The case has remained unresolved for nearly a decade, haunting the families of the victims and Mexico as a whole.

Police have apprehended 79-year-old Lambertina Galeana Marín in Chilpancingo, following a warrant issued three years ago. She was previously the head of the Superior Tribunal of Justice in Guerrero and is believed to have ordered the deletion of CCTV footage vital to the investigation into the students' disappearance.

This incident has deep roots in the events surrounding the tragic night of September 26, 2014, when the students, en route to a protest in Mexico City from their teacher training college in Ayotzinapa, were forcibly disappeared. Thus far, only the remains of three students have been recovered, while the fate of the other 40 remains a grim mystery, presumed deceased.

The disappearance has been characterized by the Mexican government's 2022 truth commission as a state-sponsored crime involving local police and the criminal group known as Guerreros Unidos. According to reports, the police collaborated with this group due to fears that the students' actions had attracted the attention of a rival gang, Los Rojos.

Local authorities set up checkpoints around the city, one of which was located outside the Palace of Justice. Testimonies suggest that the palace's security cameras recorded significant events at the roadblock, but the crucial footage was reportedly lost after months of inaction. Prosecutors now allege that Galeana orchestrated its destruction.
