Recovery of key flight recorders offers hope for answers in one of India's deadliest aviation disasters.
Crash investigators from the United States have arrived in Ahmedabad, India, to assist local authorities in their investigation of a devastating plane crash that resulted in the loss of over 270 lives. According to officials, the crucial cockpit voice recorder has been located, sparking hope for clarity on the sequence of events leading to one of India’s most catastrophic aviation disasters.
The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is conducting a parallel investigation, adhering to international protocols as the involved aircraft, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, was American-made. The Indian government confirmed that both the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder were recovered, with the latter expected to contain vital information on the final communications between the pilots. The aircraft went down just moments after taking off from Ahmedabad, en route to London Gatwick Airport.
Among the tragic toll were 241 passengers aboard the ill-fated flight, which crashed into multiple buildings, including a medical college dining hall. The intensity of the flames has complicated identification efforts, with authorities stating that DNA matching has identified 99 victims so far. Dr. Rakesh Joshi, superintendent of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, noted that 64 families have already received remains of their loved ones. Efforts continue to expedite this process, with assurances that it should conclude in a matter of days.
