**French Cities Implement Curfews for Minors Amid Rising Drug-Related Violence**

**Curfews are aimed at safeguarding youth from escalating violence prompted by drug trafficking activities.**

**As a response to increased drug-related violence, French cities like Nîmes and Béziers have enforced nighttime curfews for minors to protect them from potential harm and criminal exploitation.**

Authorities in France are taking drastic measures to tackle a surge in drug-related violence by imposing nighttime curfews for minors in several cities. Nîmes has recently announced a curfew for anyone under the age of 16, effective from 9 PM to 6 AM, in an effort to shelter youth from exposure to increasing violent incidents linked to drug trafficking.

Mayor Jean-Paul Fournier described the current climate in Nîmes as "untenable," noting the unsettling rise in gang conflicts and public shootings that left one individual dead and several others injured within the past month. The situation escalated further with the gruesome discovery of a young man's partially burned body near the city. In a bid to bolster public safety, authorities will deploy additional police units to monitor and enforce the curfew, a strategy aimed at not only protecting uninvolved minors but also preventing younger children from being exploited by drug gangs.

Béziers, located roughly 120 km to the southwest, has implemented a curfew for children under 13 since last year, extending it to those under 15 in specific regions this past March. Mayor Robert Ménard emphasized the dangers of young, unsupervised children roaming the streets late at night, highlighting that "no 10-year-old out on the street at 2 AM is up to anything but mischief."

Despite these precautionary measures, incidents of violence persist. Reports have emerged of masked youths attacking police forces using fireworks, demonstrating the ongoing challenge of maintaining order in Béziers. Similarly, Limoges has also instituted curfews during summer vacations but observed ineffective enforcement, prompting Mayor Émile Roger Lombertie to express his discontent with the unfolding situation.

This trend is symptomatic of a broader growing concern; drug-related violence is no longer confined to Marseille, historically known as the epicenter for gang violence. Recent statistics from France's interior ministry indicate that as of this year, 110 individuals have died, and over 300 others have been injured due to conflicts stemming from drug trafficking.

Justice Minister Gérard Darmanin, alongside Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau, has advocated for vigorous measures against the drug trade, leading to the establishment of two high-security prisons dedicated to housing major drug offenders and the introduction of enhanced legal frameworks to combat trafficking. In a recent development, the initial group of 17 notorious drug traffickers was transferred to a fortified prison facility, reflecting the government's commitment to addressing the root causes of escalating violence linked to drug crimes.
