Paraglider Accidentally Soars to Dangerous Heights in China's Qilian Mountains

A Chinese paraglider's equipment test turned into a life-threatening experience as he ascended over 28,000 feet, prompting safety concerns and a temporary ban from the sport.

Peng Yujiang, a 55-year-old paraglider from Gansu, China, unexpectedly reached altitudes comparable to Mount Everest while testing equipment. The hazardous flight ended with him covering in ice and frost, resulting in a six-month ban from paragliding.

In an extraordinary incident over the weekend, a paraglider in Gansu province, China, found himself facing life-threatening conditions after an unintended ascent to nearly 28,200 feet, just over 8,600 meters, in the Qilian mountain range. Peng Yujiang, the 55-year-old pilot, was initially conducting equipment tests as part of his “ground handling training,” which is essential for ensuring safe launches. During this routine, a sudden gust of wind surged him into the air, leaving him unable to control his ascent.

State media reported that much of the harrowing ordeal, during which Mr. Peng was visibly covered in frost and ice, was captured by a camera mounted on his gear. He later recounted the experience, describing the overwhelming lack of oxygen and the numbing cold that gripped his hands as he struggled to communicate over the radio for assistance.

This unexpected and extreme flight took Mr. Peng high above the typical cloud cover and into altitudes comparable to those of commercial flight paths and even approaching the summit of Mount Everest. Following widespread circulation of the alarming video footage on social media and mainstream outlets, local authorities took action to protect the safety of paragliders in the region. They imposed a six-month ban on Mr. Peng from the sport, emphasizing the need for strict adherence to safety protocols.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers inherent in extreme sports, particularly as atmospheric conditions can shift rapidly, leading to life-threatening situations. Safety experts underscore the importance of proper training, equipment checks, and understanding environmental factors before engaging in such high-altitude activities.
