Museum Urges Patrons to Honor Art After Crystal Chair Incident

Italian museum issues a call for respect after couple accidentally damages a crystal-covered artwork chair while taking selfies.

A couple's misstep at the Palazzo Maffei in Verona, Italy, has prompted the museum to appeal for greater awareness and reverence for art following an incident where a shimmering chair, encrusted with hundreds of crystals, was broken. The "Van Gogh" chair, created by artist Nicola Bolla, was damaged when the man in the couple fell onto it, resulting in two broken legs and a shattered seat. Although the chair was officially marked as artwork not for interaction, it appears the allure of social media took precedence over caution.

The couple, who filmed their antics and then fled the scene, have ignited debate on the responsibilities of visitors in art spaces. Vanessa Carlon, the museum director, expressed her disappointment that they chose to evade communication after the incident, emphasizing that the need to take photos can overshadow serious consequences. Art historian Carlotta Menegazzo elaborated on the delicate nature of the artwork, noting that despite its initial appearance of sturdiness, the chair's frame was lightweight and fragile.

Despite the damage, quick and effective restoration efforts have ensured the chair's return to its display. The museum, which features a vast array of artworks from renowned artists, aims to shift the narrative towards a more respectful approach to art without diminishing the joy that comes from engaging with it. Carlon hopes that sharing the CCTV footage will foster a dialogue on the importance of sincerity and mindfulness in cultural spaces.
