U.S. Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, for the first time, has visited a contentious aid distribution site in Gaza supported by Israel and the U.S., triggering strong reactions from local residents. Joined by U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee and accompanied by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the visit aims to investigate the activities of the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) amidst ongoing reports of violence at GHF locations.
Huckabee defended the visit, asserting that GHF sites provide "more than one million meals a day," framing it as an impressive achievement, despite the UN stating that the meals provided are insufficient to meet the population's nutritional needs. The delegation visited a GHF site near Rafah on a Friday, but the endeavor received condemnation from Gaza inhabitants, some of whom likened the trip to a "media stunt."
Louay Mahmoud, a local resident, criticized the visit, suggesting that Witkoff was only presented with a curated version of reality, disconnected from the genuine suffering of Gazans. Amer Khayrat, another resident, called for urgent humanitarian relief— not an envoy's gesture.
A retired U.S. special forces officer had previously alleged severe brutality by IDF near GHF centers, emphasizing the use of excessive force against vulnerable civilians. The GHF dismissed these claims as falsehoods propagated by a discontented ex-contractor.
The controversy surrounding the GHF intensified following its assumption of the UN distribution mechanism earlier this year, after which the situation evolved into an international focal point. Israeli forces have reportedly shot at crowds gathering for aid, leading to tragic fatalities, including a staggering 1,373 Palestinians killed while seeking food, according to UN reports.
Over the weekend, fatalities from air strikes and gunfire continued to rise, further complicating the humanitarian emergency. Israeli military responses to the situation have stirred global debate, coupled with accusations leveled against Hamas.
Recent discussions between Witkoff and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu touched on potential changes in ceasefire negotiations; however, these talks have halted amid accusations of uncooperative behavior from both sides. The worsening conditions in Gaza underscore the urgent need for comprehensive solutions to address the humanitarian impact of the ongoing conflict.
