Tragic Earthquake Strikes Turkey's Balikesir Province, Causing Casualties and Damage
A magnitude 6.1 earthquake in Turkey's Balikesir province results in one death and multiple injuries, with recovery efforts underway.
A severe earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale has hit Turkey's north-west Balikesir province, leading to significant destruction and human casualties. The tremor struck on Sunday evening, at precisely 19:53 local time (16:53 GMT), with its epicenter located in the town of Sindirgi. Unfortunately, the disaster claimed the life of an 81-year-old woman who died shortly after being rescued from the rubble. Reports indicate that 29 individuals have been injured, while 16 buildings collapsed due to the seismic activity.
Turkey's disaster management agency quickly responded to the incident, and interior minister Ali Yerlikaya reported that the quake was felt in distant cities, reaching as far as Istanbul. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his condolences and support by wishing a swift recovery to those affected. He emphasized that all recovery efforts are being monitored closely and called upon divine protection for the country against any future disasters.
Despite the destruction, search and rescue operations have concluded, and no further major damage or casualties have been reported. Yet, harrowing images from the affected areas reveal extensive destruction, with large structures reduced to piles of debris.
Turkey sits at the junction of three significant tectonic plates, making the nation prone to frequent seismic activity. A major earthquake earlier this year in February resulted in a staggering loss of life, with over 50,000 fatalities reported, along with 5,000 more in neighboring Syria. After the aftermath of that disaster, countless individuals remain displaced, highlighting the ongoing struggle with earthquake preparedness and response in the region.
