In brief

President Lula is recovering well after emergency surgery to address bleeding in his skull, with doctors confirming stable conditions and no side effects.

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil is currently recovering in an intensive care unit after undergoing emergency surgery to treat bleeding in his skull. The treatment, which took place at a hospital in São Paulo, follows a fall Mr. Lula suffered in October, which left him experiencing severe headaches and flu-like symptoms.Medical teams indicated that the surgery to drain a hematoma was "uneventful," and the president is showing signs of improvement. Dr. Roberto Kalil, the lead physician overseeing Mr. Lula's recovery, announced on Tuesday that the president is stable, communicating normally, and eating, and that he will remain under observation for the next several days. After experiencing acute discomfort, Mr. Lula, who is 79 years old, was first admitted to Hospital Sírio-Libanês in Brasília on Monday night. Subsequent scans revealed an intracranial hemorrhage, prompting the transfer to São Paulo for surgical intervention that lasted around two hours.Dr. Kalil affirmed that there were no adverse effects on Mr. Lula's brain functioning, with the operation resulting in "absolutely nothing" in terms of side effects or movement changes. The president's health has been closely monitored, and routine updates are expected as he continues to recuperate.
