In brief

As the U.S. heads towards a highly contested election, federal cybersecurity officials alert the public to the increased threat of foreign disinformation campaigns. Despite these efforts, they assert there is no evidence they will influence the election's outcome.

Russian and other foreign entities are ramping up an extensive campaign of disinformation aimed at destabilizing public trust in the electoral process, U.S. federal officials reported on Monday. While they acknowledge the increased threat level, they also emphasize that there is currently no evidence to suggest these false narratives will sway the election results. In the lead-up to Election Day, Jen Easterly, the director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), spoke about the unprecedented scale of disinformation being proliferated by foreign adversaries. “We are in an election cycle with an unprecedented amount of disinformation,” she stated, underscoring the active dissemination tactics that have been observed. In response to this growing threat, CISA has activated its election operations center to continuously monitor and address potential risks to the election, particularly focusing on voting infrastructure. Officials are prepared to provide regular updates to the public regarding any significant threats, particularly on Election Day.“Our concern lies not only in the day of voting but also in the period extending after that, particularly until Congress officially certifies the results on January 6,” Easterly added. This ongoing period presents a window for foreign actors to incite further political unrest and discord across the nation.Federal officials have been closely tracking recent incidents involving attacks on ballot boxes and election-related websites, as well as ongoing campaigns of misinformation primarily attributed to Russian sources. While vigilance is paramount, the authorities are hopeful that thorough cybersecurity measures can preserve the integrity of the election process amidst disinformation challenges.
