The fan-favorite sitcom, *Malcolm in the Middle*, is making a comeback with a four-episode special on Disney+, although it will feature a fresh face as Dewey. Erik Per Sullivan, who originally portrayed Malcolm’s younger brother from 2000 to 2006, has opted to focus on his educational journey, leaving the role to Fargo actor Caleb Ellsworth-Clark, as reported by Variety.
Frankie Muniz will reprise his role as Malcolm, along with original cast members Jane Kaczmarek and Bryan Cranston, who will return as the beloved parents Lois and Hal. Kaczmarek previously mentioned that Sullivan, now 33 years old, is thriving outside of acting, delving into Victorian literature at a prestigious university. She noted, "He wasn't interested in acting, at all," highlighting his preference for a scholarly life over a Hollywood career.
Sullivan, who grew up on the set, hasn’t been seen in the industry since his final acting role in the 2010 film *Twelve*. His absence from recent cast reunions fueled further speculation about his current pursuits, as fans express their nostalgia for the timeless series.
The original run of *Malcolm in the Middle* garnered seven Emmy Awards and became known as a modern classic, portraying the trials and tribulations of a working-class family through the eyes of an extraordinarily intelligent boy. Dewey's character, known for his mischief and resilience against sibling rivalry, played a significant role in the show's dynamic.
Production for the revival is set to kick off soon in Vancouver, Canada. This new installment promises intriguing adventures as Malcolm, now a father to a teenage daughter portrayed by Keeley Karsten, faces a new family event—a chaotic 40th wedding anniversary celebration for his parents. Alongside the original cast, newcomers will include Kiana Madeira as Malcolm’s girlfriend and Anthony Timpano as Jamie, the youngest sibling.
As excitement builds for the revival, returning cast members are gearing up to bring their characters back to life, emphasizing the bond they formed during the original series.
