In brief
Sonam Wangchuk, a native of Ladakh and renowned activist, has embarked on a campaign demanding greater autonomy for the region, seeking to protect its environment and cultural identity.
Sonam Wangchuk, a distinguished engineer, environmentalist, and laureate of the Ramon Magsaysay Award, has been at the forefront of advocacy for Ladakh, a sensitive Himalayan region in India. In light of its strategic position bordering China and Pakistan, Ladakh was realigned under direct federal control in 2019. Initially, this decision was welcomed by locals who anticipated strengthened measures to preserve Ladakh's distinct culture and eco-system. However, disappointment followed as the community felt sidelined. Discontent has fueled recent protests, including a significant 500-mile trek led by Wangchuk from Leh to New Delhi, demanding the Indian government revisit the autonomy dialogue. While the Ministry of Home Affairs has indicated a commitment to providing constitutional safeguards, no official response has addressed these protests. Wangchuk's efforts underscore a critical call for respecting local governance and environmental stewardship amidst geopolitical complexities.
