In brief
Mount Kanlaon has erupted violently, increasing the risk for future eruptions and prompting mass evacuations on Negros Island.
Mount Kanlaon, an active volcano on Negros Island in the Philippines, erupted dramatically on December 9, 2024, causing authorities to mandate the evacuation of nearly 90,000 residents. The eruption sent a two-mile-high column of ash, lava, and rocks into the atmosphere, raising immediate safety concerns for the surrounding communities.Teresito Bacolcol, head of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, emphasized the destructive potential of the volcanic activity, noting, "This is very destructive and it can burn everything in its path, including vegetation, buildings, and humans." As a precaution, officials elevated the volcano's alert level from 2 to 3, indicating increased chances for sudden and stronger explosive eruptions. In preparing for possible contingencies, authorities established a danger zone extending 6 kilometers (approximately 3.7 miles) around Mount Kanlaon. Approximately 47,000 people in the upland town of La Castellana were identified as being within this hazardous area.To facilitate the evacuation process, the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City was converted into a primary shelter, accommodating up to 30,000 evacuees. Additionally, emergency shelters were organized across eleven nearby villages to support those displaced. The Philippines is home to roughly 100 volcanoes, 24 of which are active, putting the nation in a precarious position along the Pacific Ring of Fire. Mount Kanlaon has a long history of eruptions, having erupted over 40 times since 1866, with the most notable tragedy occurring in 1996 when three hikers lost their lives due to eruptive activity. The current situation remains under close observation as experts assess the ongoing risks associated with the volcano's potential eruptions.
