In brief
On June 3, 2025, the French National Assembly took a significant step in righting a historical wrong by unanimously voting to promote Alfred Dreyfus, a Jewish army officer wrongfully convicted of espionage in 1894, to the rank of brigadier general. This long-overdue recognition comes in light of ongoing antisemitism and recent acts of vandalism against Jewish sites across France. Michel Dreyfus, the great-grandson of the promoted officer, expressed heartfelt gratitude, remarking that Alfred's military rehabilitation had been overdue since his unjust removal from service and his imprisonment in French Guiana, commonly known as Devil's Island.
