In brief

Tensions between India and Pakistan have sharply escalated in light of airstrikes and counterattacks following a terrorist attack in Kashmir, prompting concerns about regional stability.

In a significant escalation of hostilities, Indian aircraft have reportedly gone down in the wake of retaliatory strikes against Pakistan related to a deadly terrorist incident in Kashmir. The clash has led to heightened military tensions, with conflicting reports emerging from both nations regarding the number and type of aircraft involved. According to Indian officials, two or three planes were lost within India’s borders, while Pakistan claims to have shot down five Indian aircraft, including three Rafale jets, a MIG-29, a Su-30, and a Heron drone. Verification of these claims by independent sources remains unconfirmed. John E. Pike, director of GlobalSecurity.org, outlined that the downed aircraft could have been targeted using either surface-to-air or air-to-air missiles, both of which Pakistan possesses. The Rafale, a versatile twin-engine fighter jet, has been a pivotal component of India's air force since an order of 36 was placed with France, with an additional deal for 26 more jets announced in April 2025. Debris from the conflict, identified as an external fuel tank, was found in Kashmir, but experts like Trevor Ball from Armament Research Services could not confirm its exact origin or condition at the time of impact. The MIG-29, originally designed by the Soviet Union, remains a strong contender among nations operating fighter jets, often positioned against popular models such as the U.S. F-16. Similarly, the Su-30 is a larger Soviet-era jet capable of both air-to-air and ground attack operations. It has been acknowledged for its diverse combat capabilities since its debut in the 1990s.On the other hand, the Heron drone continues to serve as a critical asset for India's surveillance and reconnaissance endeavors, being part of a family of advanced unmanned aerial vehicles. As the international community continues to monitor the situation closely, the prospect of further escalation remains a significant concern for regional security and diplomatic relations. Shawn Paik's contributions to the reporting of these events have been noted in the ongoing coverage, with an emphasis on the evolving tensions between these nuclear-armed neighbors.
