April 21, 2025, 2:14 p.m. ET Pope Francis, who led over a billion Roman Catholics across the globe, passed away on Monday, prompting a profound outpouring of grief in his diocesan home of Rome. Following the news of his death, hundreds made their way to St. John Lateran, the official seat of the Roman bishop. Under a clear blue sky, locals and pilgrims alike gathered at the basilica, echoing feelings of loss and reflection for a man they viewed as more than a religious leader. Mauro Cappelli, one of the mourners, said their immediate reaction was to pay their respects at the place that felt closest to Francis. The basilica, a significant spiritual site for many, was filled with expressions of remembrance. Many attendees shared a deep sense of shock despite being aware of the pontiff's declining health. Pasquale Di Tardo, who traveled from Bari with his wife for Easter, reflected on the emotional bond he felt with Francis. “It’s a shame,” he commented, while Maria Puma from Rome expressed her mixed feelings about the Pope's legacy yet acknowledged his commitment to equality and peace. The sentiments around St. John Lateran echoed a shared hope among attendees, emphasizing the hope that Francis laid the groundwork for a more compassionate future. Amidst today’s political climate marked by division, many Romans found solace in Francis' tireless advocacy for social justice. As they honored the memory of "a man of peace," the legacy of Pope Francis continues to inspire his followers and beyond, inviting all to reflect on the ideals of understanding and unity he championed throughout his papacy.
