Nine people including five children have been stabbed to death on the outskirts of Suriname's capital, Paramaribo, according to police reports.
Another adult and child were also taken to the hospital due to serious injuries sustained during the attack, as city police detailed in their statement.
Authorities responded to an emergency call on Saturday night where they detained a male suspect by shooting him in the leg. He is currently receiving medical treatment under police supervision.
Media sources suggest that the suspect was dealing with mental health challenges, a claim supported by local officials and residents. Furthermore, President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons stated that the victims included the attacker’s family and neighbors.
In a heartfelt statement, Geerlings-Simons expressed her sorrow, stating, At a time when family and friends should be holding on to and supporting each other, we are confronted with the harsh reality that there is another side to the world. She extended her condolences to the bereaved families.
While further details about the tragic circumstances are expected from the police, it is noteworthy that Suriname has among the lowest rates of fatal stabbing incidents, making such occurrences rare.
The nation has experienced significant turmoil since its independence from the Netherlands in 1975, marked by several coups and a civil war.
