DETROIT (AP) — A suburban Detroit school district has agreed to give First Amendment training to its staff to settle a lawsuit stemming from an incident involving a local high school student who was publicly humiliated for refusing to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. The student, Danielle Khalaf, took a stand in protest against U.S. support for Israel during its ongoing conflict in Gaza.
The settlement includes a $10,000 payment from an insurance company for emotional damages suffered by Danielle, whose actions drew significant national attention.
The Plymouth-Canton Community Schools did not admit any liability but expressed admiration for Danielle, describing her as courageous for speaking out. Our mission is to foster a school environment that is safe, respectful, and welcoming for all, said Superintendent Monica Merritt.
In January 2025, Danielle, a student of Palestinian descent, declined to participate in the Pledge of Allegiance for three consecutive days. The lawsuit claims that her teacher admonished her, implying a lack of respect, and even suggested she should “go back to her country” if she did not like it.
This incident left Danielle with emotional distress, including nightmares and fractured friendships, underscoring the issue of respect for diverse backgrounds within educational institutions.
It was terrifying at times, scary to face a teacher and overwhelming with the attention that came with the publicity, Danielle stated in a release overseen by the American Civil Liberties Union and Arab American Civil Rights League. But it taught me the importance of speaking up for what I believe is right.”
In response to the settlement, the Plymouth-Canton district will also ensure the removal of any negative references in Danielle's school records related to her actions. This case highlights the need for educational institutions to be sensitive to the diverse backgrounds of their students.
Michigan is home to over 300,000 residents of Middle Eastern or North African descent, making it one of the states with the largest such populations in the U.S., according to Census Bureau data.
