Pivnichnyi Bridge in Kyiv

Pivnichnyi (Northern) Bridge, hit by a Russian drone, with traffic halted.

Kyiv’s mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that a Russian drone strike struck the city’s second major crossing, the Pivnichnyi Bridge, causing structural and electrical damage to the roadway and trolleybus overhead wires.

The impact ruptured the bridge’s surface and disabled the electrical system that powers local buses, immediately blocking all traffic between the eastern and western banks of the Dnipro River.

This attack follows a series of strikes on Kyiv’s Southern Bridge earlier in the week, marking a discernible escalation in Moscow’s campaign to incapacitate critical transport infrastructure in the capital.

Mayor Klitschko warned that the city is now in a “very dramatic situation” as Moscow targets key routes, logistics hubs and residential areas, effectively tearing spatial cohesion and complicating emergency medical responses.

Beyond the immediate human toll, repeated strikes on bridge infrastructure heighten risks of pollutants entering the Dnipro River, potentially affecting aquatic habitats and local food safety—a concern that underscores the intersection between military conflict and environmental integrity.

Climbers, civil engineers, and environmental observers now monitor the back‑up systems and repair efforts, noting that resilient urban design can mitigate some of the long‑term ecological damage caused by such attacks.
