In brief
In a heartwarming story, baby Siwar Ashour, weighing only 3 kg due to malnutrition, has been evacuated from war-torn Gaza to Jordan for medical treatment. Accompanied by her family, the journey marks a rare glimpse of hope and relief, showing the impact of ongoing conflict on families in desperate need of help.
Empty Line 4In a rare respite from the turmoil engulfing Gaza, six-month-old Siwar Ashour was evacuated to Jordan, her frail voice signaling her will to survive against all odds. Weighing only 3kg (6.6lb), Siwar's condition was dire, prompting her mother Najwa, 23, to express immense relief upon reaching the Jordanian border. "It feels like there is a truce," she said, hopeful for a peaceful night away from the sounds of conflict.Accompanied by her grandmother Reem, who made a symbolic 'V' sign for victory, and her blind father Saleh, whose sole focus is Siwar’s recovery, the family embarked on this journey for a better future. Saleh voiced his deep concern, stating, "We want to get her to a safe shore. I want to make sure she is safe and cured." Siwar's health deteriorated in recent months as the severe Israeli blockade hampered access to nutritional resources necessary for her care. Despite private efforts and support from the Jordanian Field Hospital, it was clear that specialized medical attention was urgently needed. In a humanitarian gesture made earlier this year, Jordan agreed to treat 2,000 seriously ill children from Gaza, of which Siwar became one of the 16 children evacuated.Upon arrival, Siwar and other children were welcomed to an air-conditioned hall, a stark contrast to the stressful conditions they had fled. Parents and children appeared worn and traumatized, having lived through harrowing experiences of evacuation and fear. Najwa's own journey with Siwar had led to painful separations, illustrating the devastating human cost of ongoing conflict. While Siwar was handed off to a nurse for further treatment, her family could finally rest without the fear of bombardment. The hope for recovery now lies in their grasp, as the little girl receives the care that was impossible in the besieged area. With her journey to recovery beginning, the story of Siwar serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices families make in the face of war and the enduring strength of love.
