In brief

Amid mounting tensions in Venezuela, opposition leader María Corina Machado was briefly detained during a protest against Nicolás Maduro's impending inauguration. Supporters rallied in large numbers, defying government intimidation, as Machado vowed to continue the fight for freedom.

In a significant turn of events, María Corina Machado, the prominent Venezuelan opposition leader, was forcibly detained on Thursday but later released during a protest in Caracas against Nicolás Maduro’s controversial inauguration. Her party disclosed via social media that she was “violently intercepted” by regime authorities as she was departing the rally, and shots were reportedly fired at the motorbikes transporting her. This marked Machado's first public appearance in several months, having evaded government capture while rallying support against Maduro’s third presidential term. Thousands joined the protest, chanting “Freedom! Freedom! Freedom!” demonstrating their solidarity with Machado, who was previously living in hiding due to threats from the regime. According to her aide, Magalli Meda, Machado’s detainment involved coercion, including prompting her to record videos under duress. Following her release, she is expected to address the public directly regarding her experience during the incident. Amid ongoing protests, Venezuelan security forces are reported to have engaged in pervasive tactics to suppress opposition, including widespread detentions since the elections held on July 28.In defiance of intimidation tactics, Machado expressed her determination to fight back, emphasizing the growing strength of the opposition movement. She stated, “This force that we have built and that grows every day has prepared us for this final phase.” The international community, including the United States, remains critical of Maduro’s regime, which is accused of manipulating electoral outcomes to maintain power. As political unrest continues to brew in Venezuela, the situation remains volatile, drawing global attention to the struggle for democracy in the nation.
