In brief
In an unprecedented move, North Korea has confirmed the military involvement of its troops in the war against Ukraine, marking a significant escalation in its support for Russia.
North Korea's leader, Kim Jong-un, has publicly confirmed the country's military involvement in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, stating that North Korean troops have been sent to support Russia. This disclosure comes amidst reports of a increasing number of North Korean soldiers being deployed to the region. In a statement from the Central Military Commission of the ruling Workers’ Party, Kim emphasized that sending troops represents “the highest strategic level of the firm militant friendship” between North Korea and Russia. In a symbolic show of respect for their soldiers, Kim announced plans to erect a monument in honor of those who lost their lives in combat. The North's state media cited that around 4,000 troops have either been killed or wounded fighting alongside Russian forces, further highlighting the significance of this military engagement. Russian military officials have acknowledged this contribution, with General Valery Gerasimov praising the North Korean forces for their "fortitude and heroism," especially during offensives aimed at reclaiming Russian territories that were previously lost to Ukrainian forces. The North Korean leader praised his troops' “heroism and bravery,” stating that tributes, including flowers placed at the graves of the fallen soldiers, would be forthcoming. This move emphasizes the desire to solidify the military bond between Pyongyang and Moscow amid ongoing global tensions related to the war in Ukraine.
