In brief
In her recent experience learning mahjong, Melissa Kirsch emphasizes the initial discomfort of acquiring a new skill, yet reveals the potential for community and personal growth that comes from sharing these journeys with others.
Last week, I took on the challenge of learning Hong Kong-style mahjong in a Brooklyn restaurant, driven by my curiosity and a desire for new experiences. Surrounded by a group of fellow novices, I was quickly immersed in a colorful world filled with tiles and intricate rules. While each element of the game was detailed seamlessly by our instructor, I couldn’t shake off the waves of confusion and embarrassment that ebbed and flowed as I struggled to grasp the new concepts. In a world that often prioritizes comfort and mastery, I pondered why I had signed up for this task in the first place. Adult life can become monotonous, and we often gravitate toward familiar activities where we feel confident. Yet, as I learned the steps to set up the game and the meanings behind the tiles, I recognized a deeper yearning for novelty and connection that had laid dormant within me.The discomfort of learning something new is palpable. It's easier to relish in our strengths than to face a steep learning curve. My friend's spontaneous purchase of a mahjong set a few days later, however, became a turning point. It represented an opportunity to embrace the fact that none of us needed to be experts; we could forge a common ground through shared struggles and triumphs. That simple act rekindled my hope for fostering connections through our collective inexperience. While mastering mahjong may have seemed daunting, the real treasure lay in the excitement of gathering together—creating new memories and friendships over the game. We’re often hesitant to step outside our comfort zones, but sometimes, it’s exactly that discomfort that leads to meaningful experiences and the formation of a supportive community. In conclusion, learning a new skill may be uncomfortable, but taking the plunge can lead to communal growth, shared enjoyment, and forging new pathways of friendship—something we all crave in our increasingly isolated lives.
