In a significant ruling, ten individuals have been convicted for cyber-bullying Brigitte Macron, the wife of French President Emmanuel Macron, through a Paris court. These defendants faced allegations of disseminating false claims about her gender and sexual orientation while also making derogatory remarks about the couple’s 24-year age difference.
Most of the accused received suspended prison sentences of up to eight months, while one individual was sentenced to immediate jail time for not attending court. The court's decision underscores the damaging intent behind the online remarks, which were deemed degrading and insulting.
Among the convicted were Natacha Rey, a self-proclaimed independent journalist, and Amandine Roy, who falsely claimed that Brigitte Macron did not exist. Although initially found guilty of slander in 2024, they were later cleared on appeal, with the court stating that their comments did not necessarily constitute an attack on Brigitte Macron’s honor. The Macrons are now appealing this decision in a higher court.
Following the verdict, Jean Ennochi, Brigitte Macron's lawyer, expressed that the suspension of some social media accounts and the implementation of prevention courses for the offenders were vital outcomes of the case.
Brigitte Macron’s daughter, Tiphaine Auzière, testified that the cyber-bullying has significantly harmed her mother’s health and impacted family dynamics, especially the lives of her grandchildren, who have faced bullying at school.
This ruling in France precedes a larger case in the United States, where the Macrons have filed a defamation lawsuit against Candace Owens for promoting conspiracy theories about Brigitte's gender. The couple, initially advised to remain silent about the rumors, shifted their strategy in response to the persistence and growth of the online attacks.
Brigitte Macron's saga began when she first met Emmanuel Macron while teaching at his secondary school, and they married in 2007 despite the age disparity. The ongoing debates and controversies around her identity reveal the complex dynamics of public perception and the role of social media in perpetuating harmful narratives.
