An Indian judge’s moving letter praising a child rape survivor for her "courage" and assuring her that her abuser "will live in a cage for the rest of his life" is winning hearts in India.
Trial court Judge Rajani Ranga’s letter addresses a 10‑year‑old who was sexually abused on 23 July 2023 when she was seven. She referred to her as the bravest little girl the court has ever seen.
The court handed the convict a life sentence, emphasizing that he would remain in prison for the remainder of his natural life and awarded the survivor a compensation of 1.05 million rupees ($10,941). At the end of her order, Judge Ranga urges the child to live her life: go to school, make friends, laugh, play, and dream while the court remembers her courage.
At the heart of the letter: “When you said the uncle must stay in jail until he grows old, the court listened. Now he will never walk free again. He will grow old and die in that cage.”
Judge Ranga praised the child for speaking up, telling her mother, and for showing courage that has spared other children from harm. She ended by reminding the child that the court cannot restore her childhood but will always remember her fortitude.
The letter was part of an order announced on 11 July, but Pocso court judgments are normally confidential. The letter emerged after a Delhi High Court order rejected the convict’s bail appeal and published the convict’s name but withheld other details. The High Court judges described the letter as “a message of encouragement” and ordered the Delhi State Legal Authority to print a copy for the child alongside the compensation fund.
The emotional letter has been praised as a rarity and a ray of hope. Many sharing it on social media expressed sorrow at the horrific nature of the crime. They also highlighted the reality that more than 69,000 Pocso cases were recorded in India in 2024, with many abusers being known and trusted by the victims.
Campaigners note that the 7‑year‑old’s case reflects a larger trend where abusive relationships often go unreported. Survivors report that such abuse can scar them for the rest of their lives.
The judge’s order also speaks to how the assault can have a permanent impact on a child. She evaluated the depth of suffering and the lasting effects, stating that her order was an attempt to heal and restore.
