Jackie, California's Bald Eagle Star, Succumbs After Intensive Care

Veterans and fans mourn Jackie, the celebrated eagle, after her death following weeks of treatment.

Jackie was a beloved feathered icon who reached the internet in spring 2012 after a nesting video captured her with her mate Shadow. The pair were first seen in 2018, and the video set up a huge following worldwide, amassing hundreds of thousands of active viewers on the Big Bear Eagle Nest Cam run by Friends of Big Bear Valley.

After being attacked by other eagles, Jackie was rescued and flown to the Ojai Raptor Center in California. The veterinary team found she was suffering from anemia and significant weight loss, which compounded her recovery from the attack.

Despite intensive care over weeks—including advanced diagnostics and specialized treatments—the bird’s condition continued to worsen. “Over the past several days, her condition continued to deteriorate despite intensive treatment,” the raptor center announced.

The center’s spokesperson said they had consulted specialists and were working closely with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. The organization will release a more comprehensive technical statement with treatment details and test results later.

In keeping with wildlife protocol, Jackie's remains have been transferred to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife for proper handling and study.

Jackie’s passing has highlighted the intersections of wildlife conservation, climate disruption, and community stewardship. Her story is a reminder that protecting animal health—and the wider ecosystems that support them—remains essential in a warming planet.
