In brief
The lavish lifestyle of the president's son, Kaesang Pangarep, has sparked outrage in Indonesia as he traveled on a private jet linked to a business deal, prompting an investigation into potential corruption.
In a significant development for Indonesian politics, the son of President Joko Widodo, Kaesang Pangarep, has come under fire following a controversial private jet journey to the United States. The trip, which has been widely criticized, starkly contrasts with the modest image of the president, who is set to step down soon.Social media posts by Kaesang and his wife, Erina Gudono, depicted them enjoying luxury items like a $1,500 stroller and a lavish $25 lobster roll. The opulence of their travels drew ire from the public, especially in a country where economic challenges persist for many citizens. The couple's choice to fly on a private jet linked to Shopee, an online shopping platform, further fueled controversy. The jet was reportedly tied to a project in the city of Solo, a location significant to Mr. Joko’s political career, where his older son previously served as mayor. Critics question whether Kaesang, as the brother of the mayor, would have had access to such lavish transportation without his familial connections. In response to mounting public outrage, the Indonesian Anti-Corruption Community filed a formal complaint, raising suspicions that the flight may have been a form of bribery. Mr. Kaesang, however, denied any wrongdoing, claiming he simply "hitchhiked" on a friend's plane without revealing the identity of this friend. The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) of Indonesia has since launched an investigation to assess if this incident qualifies as a legal breach. Currently, the inquiry is in its "internal administration process," according to a spokesperson from the KPK. While the ownership of the jet remains unclear, it is known that it was formerly owned by Garena Online, part of the same parent company as Shopee, SEA Limited, based in Singapore. This unfolding situation puts Joko Widodo's administration under scrutiny as it departs from its simple lifestyle narrative while the nation grapples with economic disparity.
