Heatwaves, storms and rising seas threaten the future of air travel
In late June, heatwaves turned southern England into a furnace while towering thunderclouds gathered over London and much of northern Europe. Thousands of passengers rushed to Heathrow and Gatwick for holiday flights, only to find routes snarled by storms, 900 flights delayed by up to 11 hours and dozens cancelled.
Air traffic controllers faced a congested airspace, forcing aircraft to wait on the ground. While the weather had cooled, the incident serves as a warning that increasingly volatile climates will create frequent disruptions for airlines, airports and travellers.
Tim Atkinson, a former pilot turned risk consultant, warns that the UK's dense network of airports means the system is especially exposed. He fears that when storms hit all of London’s hubs simultaneously, large‑scale flight disruptions or even fuel‑in‑air incidents could arise.
Intense weather in service mode
At NATS, controllers monitor thunderheads in real time, but rapidly moving storms mean diversions are often executed late in flight, burning extra fuel. Airlines may have to carry more fuel to guard against such conditions, raising operating costs that will likely be passed on to passengers.
Advanced runway spacing models and dynamic spacing calculations allow Heathrow and Gatwick to better manage high‑wind landings, improving landing rates. Yet heavier rainfall can flood runways, as the April 2024 Dubai incident proved, shutting runways for days and cancelling over a thousand flights.
Clear‑air turbulence and climate
Clear‑air turbulence—unseen at high altitudes—has increased as the climate warms. Instances of severe turbulence now occur more frequently, potentially endangering passengers and crews. Forecasting improvements and laser‑based detection offer hope for better mitigation.
Sea level rise and airport vulnerability
The rising tide poses a silent threat. LaGuardia Airport, sitting on reclaimed land, closed for days after Hurricane Sandy flooding in 2012. Among 269 airports already at risk from sea‑level rise, large hubs such as Amsterdam Schiphol and London City face potential future closures.
Mitigating flood risk could cost up to $57 bn over the next century, with the burden falling on airlines, airports, governments and passengers.
With the aviation sector expected to double its fleet size by 2050 while fighting to become carbon‑neutral, the combination of extreme storms, turbulence, and flooding will demand new operational, infrastructural and financial strategies.
Andrew Charlton, head of Aviation Advocacy, stresses that the best defence is mitigation: adequate terminal space for delayed passengers, transport and accommodation capacity, and better forecasting. “Disruptive moments will happen more, but we can prepare for them,” he says.
