Harvey Weinstein Receives 15‑Year Prison Term for Sexual Assault

Former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after a jury found him guilty of committing a criminal sexual act against former assistant Miriam Haley.

In a victim‑impact statement presented in court, Miriam Haley described the assault as having a “devastating effect on my life and sense of security that may never go away”. The statement underscored the enduring psychological toll of Weinstein’s actions.

During his court appearance, which took place while Weinstein was sitting in a wheelchair, he denied the allegations but apologized to “anyone I may have hurt by my actions”.

Weinstein has already been incarcerated for several years in New York, where he has faced three trials over rape and abuse allegations. He was also convicted in a separate sex‑crime case in Los Angeles.

This is the second prison sentence granted in the Miriam Haley case. He was first found guilty and sentenced in 2020, but New York Supreme Court overturned that conviction in 2024, ruling that Weinstein did not receive a fair trial. The court also overturned a conviction involving actress Jessica Mann.

Weinstein was retried and again convicted last year on a single charge of a criminal sexual act against Haley. At sentencing, the judge, Curtis Farber, criticized Weinstein for refusing to accept responsibility and for exploiting power through force.

Weinstein, aged 74, is now being held in a prison ward at New York’s Bellevue Hospital for health issues reported during his incarceration.

The series of indictments against Weinstein began publicly in 2017, after the New York Times and The New Yorker exposed multiple allegations by women spanning decades, triggering the #MeToo movement and leading to scrutiny of systemic sexual harassment in Hollywood.
