In brief
The UN chief has warned that the ballooning military budgets are detrimental to global peace and development. With military spending hitting record $2.7 trillion, Guterres emphasizes the need to redirect resources toward poverty alleviation, health care, education, and clean energy, proposing a rethink of global security strategies at the upcoming General Assembly.
UNITED NATIONS — The increasing global military expenditures are compromising vital investments in health, education, and job creation, with no guarantees for peace, warns the United Nations Secretary-General.
Antonio Guterres highlighted that elevated military spending often exacerbates arms races, deepens mistrust, and diverts essential resources needed for stability. Nations around the world boosted military budgets, pushing expenditures to a staggering $2.7 trillion, following a decade of military escalation.
A recent UN report titled The Security We Need: Rebalancing Military Spending for a Sustainable and Peaceful Future, will be a significant topic of discussion at the General Assembly starting on September 22. The report scrutinizes the impact of military spending on the UN's development goals for 2030, including the cessation of global hunger, promotion of good health, and provision of quality education.
Guterres reported that only 35% of the 17 goals established by world leaders in 2015 are on the right track, stating, A more secure world begins by investing at least as much in fighting poverty as we do in fighting wars. The current trajectory of military spending, he warns, is unsustainable.
He points out that a redirection of even a small portion of military budgets could help close crucial gaps in development. Investing in health care, education, clean energy, and infrastructure can provide lasting benefits for humanity, according to the report.
The UN asserts that underfunding essential social services while excessively investing in military endeavors only perpetuates cycles of poverty and insecurity. Guterres stressed that nations should prioritize the core needs of their populations to maintain peace and stability globally.
The message to world leaders is clear: a rethinking of global security strategies is imperative, and prioritizing development over military might is crucial for humanity's survival.
