Grammy‑winning rapper Lil Durk was acquitted on Friday of all charges in a federal murder‑for‑hire case accusing him of orchestrating the revenge killing of a man shot dead in a daytime ambush in Los Angeles four years ago.
Chicago hip‑hop star Durk—real name Durk Devontay Banks—was arrested in 2024 and charged with arranging a shooting that killed the cousin of rival rapper Quando Rondo. Defence lawyer Drew Findling said the artist was "thankful" after the verdict.
Totaling five felony counts—including murder‑for‑hire resulting in death and conspiracy—the case could have carried a life sentence if he had been found guilty.
Despite the acquittal, Banks remains in custody and will face a separate trial on 5 October on racketeering murder and firearms charges.
Altogether, the three‑day jury deliberation saw co‑defendants Deandre "OTF Dede" Wilson and David "Browneyez" Lindsey convicted of stalking and conspiracy to commit stalking but were acquitted of the murder‑for‑hire charges. The trial hinged on testimony from three cooperating witnesses—Kavon "OTF Vonnie" Grant, Keith "Flacka" Jones and Kacey "OTF Jam" Hester—who reached plea deals and testified against Banks, Wilson and Lindsey.
The case originated from a fatal shooting in August 2022 at a petrol station in Los Angeles, where a car carrying Quando Rondo was fired upon. Rondo was unharmed, but his cousin Saviay’a Robinson was killed. Federal prosecutors alleged Banks plotted to kill Rondo in retaliation for the earlier murder of Chicago OTF rapper King Von.
King Von had been killed in 2020 by an early‑morning gunfire exchange in Atlanta. A friend of Rondo was charged with Von’s murder but the charges were later dropped.
Prosecutors argued that Banks had felt social media pressure to avenge Von’s death, offering a bounty to anyone who killed Rondo. Banks, the founder of OTF Music in 2010, also won the 2024 Grammy for Best Melodic Rap Performance for his single "All My Life" featuring J Cole and has received additional Grammy nominations.
