US lawmakers have released more than 20,000 pages of documents from the estate of the disgraced financier and convicted late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Some of the documents mention Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, the former prince and brother of King Charles; US President Donald Trump; Trump's former advisor Steve Bannon; and a cast of other characters from the world of media, politics and entertainment, who highlight the extent of Epstein's contact book.
Trump was a friend of Epstein's for years, but the president has said they fell out in about 2004, years before Epstein was first arrested. Trump has consistently denied any wrongdoing in relation to Epstein.
In addition to Trump, the documents mention:
Michael Wolff
Michael Wolff, 72, is an American journalist and columnist known for his books on high-profile figures. Emails released indicate Wolff provided strategic advice to Epstein regarding Donald Trump during the latter's presidential campaign, highlighting the complex intertwining of their relationships.
Larry Summers
Correspondence between Epstein and Larry Summers, former Treasury Secretary under President Bill Clinton, shows frequent meetings and discussions about prominent global figures. Summers expressed a desire to distance himself from Trump-related matters post-election due to ethical concerns.
Kathryn Ruemmler
Emails between Epstein and Kathryn Ruemmler, who served as White House counsel during Obama’s presidency, include discussions on hush-money payments associated with Donald Trump. Ruemmler later expressed regret regarding her association with Epstein.
Peter Thiel
Peter Thiel, the billionaire investor and supporter of Donald Trump, was mentioned in Epstein's files regarding an invitation to Epstein's Caribbean island. Thiel publicly distanced himself from Epstein in later discussions.
Noam Chomsky
A prominent linguist, Chomsky's correspondence with Epstein covered various topics, including brief predictions about Trump, but also included reflections on their previously acknowledged acquaintance.
Peggy Siegal
Publicist Peggy Siegal discussed PR strategies at Epstein's behest, including attempts to discredit allegations against him. Siegal stated she did not follow through with Epstein's dubious requests.
This release of documents not only reveals the extensive network Epstein maintained but also highlights the ethical dilemmas faced by those in power and their varied responses to their connections with him.
