In brief

Honduran officials have initiated the extradition process for Eswin Mejia, an undocumented immigrant accused of causing the 2016 death of Iowa woman Sarah Root. This move aligns with the Honduran government's recent efforts to cooperate with U.S. requests for extradition.

Honduras is acting on a U.S. request to extradite Eswin Mejia, who allegedly killed 21-year-old Sarah Root in a drunk-driving incident in January 2016. Following his alleged crime, Mejia was initially detained but fled the U.S. after posting bail. He was captured in Honduras, approximately 125 miles from Tegucigalpa, following more than 50 extradition requests from the U.S. under President Xiomara Castro's administration. Honduran Foreign Minister Enrique Reina confirmed that Mejia's extradition would go through legal processes, with a decision pending from a Supreme Court judge. This highlights a strengthening partnership between Honduras and the U.S. under the current government.
