NEW YORK — Born in the West Bank and now detained in Texas, Leqaa Kordia's journey reflects the plight faced by many activists caught in political turmoil. Growing up, she was separated from her family in Gaza due to Israeli restrictions, receiving calls about their daily lives that now echo with anguish as many relatives have perished in the recent conflict.

I feel helpless most days, Kordia states from her detention cell. Arrested for protesting against Israel's military actions, she finds herself isolated behind bars, significantly hoping to amplify the voices of her deceased relatives.

Previously living in New Jersey, Kordia's immigration status became complicated after being arrested alongside prominent activists during widespread demonstrations. Despite many of her peers gaining release, she remains trapped in a complex legal situation.

Her commitment to her cause stems from devastating personal losses in Gaza, where airstrikes have claimed numerous family members. Kordia’s calls with relatives reveal the harsh realities of their existence, prompting her to protest for justice and advocacy.

In their words, 'We’re hungry. …We are scared,' I realized I must act, she recalls, describing her participation in rallies advocating for Gaza. However, her activism turned into detention when Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) apprehended her due to her involvement in protests and misinterpreted money transfers to family as suspicious.

Kordia's case highlights the challenges faced by many immigrants in the U.S. who assert their political beliefs. A federal judge recently criticized the previous administration's tactics against demonstrators like Kordia, asserting unjustified detentions based on their beliefs could not be tolerated.

As she spends her days behind bars, fearing for her family's safety and fighting for her release in court, Kordia dreams of a day when she can return to her community and reunite with her loved ones, hoping to open a café and share her culture with the world. Her story serves as a poignant reminder of the personal toll of political activism and the relentless pursuit of freedom.
