Cosmic Radiation Recognised as Occupational Cancer Risk for Flight Attendants
A court in southwestern France has, for the first time, declared cosmic radiation a contributing factor in the breast‑cancer diagnosis of former Air France stewardess Sophie Lainault, who served the airline from 1989 to 2019. The judgment lists cosmic radiation as one of three occupational hazards—alongside passive smoking on flights until 2000 and prolonged night work—that can lead to breast cancer.
Lainault, now 59 and in remission, can therefore retire early with full coverage for further treatment under the French health system. Lawyers say the ruling also paves the way for other flight crews to claim similar benefits.
In addition to the legal decision, a recent Harvard Medical School study highlighted that pilots and flight attendants faced the highest proportion of radiation‑related cancer deaths—6.9 % in attendants and 6.7 % in pilots—among more than 500 professions studied. Those rates exceed even that of nuclear technicians, who are routinely exposed to non‑cosmic radiation.
The study notes that while individual causation is hard to prove, the dose of cosmic rays received by crew members at high altitudes can increase cancer risk, especially on polar routes where Earth’s magnetic field offers less shielding.
Air France said it does not comment on the case ruling but reaffirms that the health and security of all employees is an absolute imperative. The airline stresses that every staff member receives medical support that goes well beyond regulatory minimums.
