Angry Anderson, rock star, dies aged 79

Gary "Angry" Anderson, frontman of the iconic Australian rock band Rose Tattoo, died on 23 September. He was 79 years old.

In 1976 the band first hit the Australian music scene with their debut album. Anderson’s solo single, Suddenly, released in 1987, became a worldwide hit after it was featured during the wedding of Charlene Mitchell and Scott Robinson in the long‑running soap Neighbours. That episode drew 20 million viewers in the UK.

His performance on the track was applauded by Kylie Minogue, who insisted on its use, and Anderson has called the song the best he ever wrote.

Joey Donovan, co‑star of the famous wedding scene, said in a tribute on Instagram, "Legend! What a great guy…Another great Australian…Thank you for all the music and memories. Condolences to all friends and family."

Anderson suffered a cardiac arrest during Rose Tattoo’s farewell tour in Europe earlier this month. He was hospitalized in Melbourne before returning home, but the band had to cancel nine upcoming dates.

The Rose Tattoo family released an official statement, noting Anderson as a “devoted father” and a “much‑loved bandmate.” The statement added: "His loss will be deeply felt by all who knew him here and overseas. We thank everyone for their prayers and messages of love and continued support."

Beyond his stage success, Anderson was a past Member of the Order of Australia, honored in 1993 for his community service and youth advocacy. His musical legacy remains a testament to the cultural impact and community spirit that continues to echo in Australia and beyond.
