In brief
Ukrainian police officer Volodymyr Nikulin's harrowing experience reflects the struggles of millions displaced by the war, highlighting resilience in the face of adversity as he navigates fleeing from city to city under constant threat.
In the war-scarred region of eastern Ukraine, Volodymyr Nikulin, a dedicated police officer, embodies the resilience and spirit of those caught in the turmoil of conflict. His belongings could fit in a battered car — one that bears the scars of shrapnel from near-miss bombings — along with a small sack of clothes and a few essentials in plastic bags. A testament to the harrowing reality faced by many Ukrainians, Mr. Nikulin’s life is a constant cycle of escape and adaptation as he seeks safety in the shifting battleground of Donbas.Forced to flee his home multiple times as Russian forces advance, Nikulin currently inhabits a friend's apartment in Sloviansk, a mere 15 miles from the front lines. With a backdrop of distant artillery echoing through the walls, he remains poised for yet another sudden departure. “Who knows where I’ll be in a few months?” he reflects, highlighting the uncertainty that has become a grim routine for countless civilians like him. Yet, there’s a flicker of levity in his voice as he calls his vehicle “my lucky car,” the very means of his survival during turbulent scuffles. His journey began in Donetsk in 2014, during a time when pro-Russian separatists seized control of the city, marking a chaotic descent into war. Following this, he fled again in 2022 when Mariupol was besieged, and most recently, he left Myrnohrad amidst escalating conflict. Each relocation carved out emotional voids as he abandoned memories and mementos, witnessing the destruction of his neighborhood and mourning friends lost to the violence. As a police officer, Mr. Nikulin also bears the weight of responsibility for others. He has played a crucial role in evacuating besieged towns and assisting journalists fleeing Mariupol, ensuring the world sees the devastation wrought by war. His experiences shine a light not just on personal trials but also on the broader narrative of survival and resilience that characterizes life amid conflict in Ukraine.Nikulin’s determination and commitment are a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggles millions face in their fight for safety and peace as the conflict rages on, impacting every aspect of life in the region.
