The Italian fashion industry is in mourning following the death of Rosita Missoni, a trailblazer in knitwear and co-founder of the luxury brand, Missoni. She passed away at the age of 93, a loss recognized by numerous tributes, including that of Lombardy’s president, Attilio Fontana, who extolled her iconic “multicoloured textures.”Rosita Missoni launched her brand with her husband, Ottavio, in 1953, in the Lombardy region, and the label became famous for its signature zig-zag motifs. Born in 1931 in Golasecca to a family of shawl makers, Rosita's early life was steeped in textiles. She met Ottavio during a trip to London for an English course while he was competing in the 1948 Olympics as a hurdler.Their marriage in 1953 served as the foundation for their fashion empire, beginning with a modest machine-knitwear workshop in Gallarate, located northwest of Milan. The pivotal moment came in 1958 when a Milanese department store made a substantial order for their striped dresses, propelling Missoni into the spotlight. Their first catwalk show in 1966 and a subsequent exhibition in Florence led to international acclaim, particularly after a bold decision to have models forgo visible bras, a move that stirred controversy while boosting their visibility.Merely a decade after Tai Missoni's passing in 2013, the brand has continued to thrive under the stewardship of their daughter Angela, while Rosita maintained her influence through the Missoni Home line, showcasing her enduring passion for design.
