In brief

Prosecutors in Berlin have charged a 40-year-old doctor with the murder of 15 patients, primarily using lethal injections. The case highlights grave concerns over patient care and ethical standards in healthcare systems.

A shocking case has emerged from Germany, where a 40-year-old doctor specializing in palliative care is facing murder charges for the deaths of 15 of his patients. Prosecutors allege that between September 2021 and July 2024, the doctor administered lethal cocktails of drugs to 12 women and 3 men, allegedly without their consent. The accused has not been publicly named due to stringent privacy regulations in Germany. The prosecution claims that part of the suspect's scheme involved setting fire to the homes of some victims to hide his crimes, with incidents reported in five separate cases. The judge noted that the ages of the deceased patients, ranging from 25 to 94, displayed a troubling pattern of suspicious deaths. Evidence suggests that the doctor used anaesthetics and muscle relaxants, which induced respiratory failure, leading to rapid death. For instance, two patients died on the same day in July 2024, sparking deeper investigations into the doctor’s past practices. In one incident, the doctor reportedly attempted to ignite a fire in a patient’s apartment but failed. Following this, he allegedly misled relatives about his presence at the scene.Though initially apprehended for the suspected murders of four individuals, new investigations and exhumations of additional corpses have revealed more alarming evidence, raising fears that the total number of victims could increase. Authorities are now pursuing a "lifelong professional ban" and preventative detention for the accused, who remains in custody as the investigation continues, prompting questions about accountability and patient safety in the healthcare sector.
