In brief

In a groundbreaking move, Agatha Christie's digital avatar will guide aspiring writers in an online course, raising ethical discussions surrounding the use of AI and the preservation of artistic legacy.

Agatha Christie may have passed away in 1976, but she is making a comeback in a novel way—by teaching a writing class. With her distinctive voice and style captured through advanced artificial intelligence, Christie's avatar is set to lead an online course via BBC Maestro, resembling platforms like Master Class. For £79 (roughly $105), aspiring authors can gain insights from one of the most celebrated novelists in history. The course is a collaborative effort between academic researchers and AI experts who curated a script based on Christie's written works and archived interviews. According to Michael Levine, CEO of BBC Maestro, this initiative aims to honor Christie's legacy without misleading students into thinking they are interacting with her physically. “We are not trying to pretend, in any way, that this is Agatha somehow brought to life. This is just a representation of Agatha to teach her own craft,” he emphasized. As this technological venture unfolds, it also intersects with ongoing concerns about the ethics of artificial intelligence in creative fields. In the UK, there is a growing apprehension among artists regarding potential changes to copyright laws that could exploit their works for AI training without consent. Fortunately, in this case, Christie's family has fully supported the project. James Prichard, her great-grandson and head of Agatha Christie Ltd., stated, “We just had the red line that it had to be her words. And the image and the voice had to be like her.”By blending literary mastery with cutting-edge technology, this online course not only aims to educate but also sparks critical conversations about the future of artistry in the age of AI. As writers engage with Christie's teachings, they are faced with questions about the essence of creativity, legacy preservation, and the role of technology in storytelling.
