In brief

Pouria Amirshahi, a progressive French MP, is urging U.S. authorities to reconsider their decision to deny him a visa for a planned visit to engage with American lawmakers and intellectuals about the political landscape under President Trump.

French lawmaker Pouria Amirshahi, representing the Green party, has publicly called on U.S. officials to overturn their recent decision denying him entry into the United States. Amirshahi's planned visit to Washington D.C., New York, and Boston was aimed at fostering dialogue with American progressive lawmakers and intellectuals to gain insight into the political climate since Trump's rise to power. The trip was intended to be the inaugural journey of "La Digue," a coalition of leftist and centrist French lawmakers that Amirshahi established to address the concerns related to the growing influence of neo-fascism in liberal democracies. He expressed his disappointment during a press conference held at the French National Assembly. “The door was shut in a rather abrupt and unexpected manner,” he stated, emphasizing that the visa refusal felt both “hostile and unfriendly.” Amirshahi had planned meetings with notable figures including Senator Peter Welch and Representative Maxine Dexter, aiming to understand their experiences and perspectives during the Trump administration. Despite the setback, Amirshahi’s team reported that the U.S. embassy was reconsidering the reasons behind the visa denial, leaving room for hope for a potential reversal of the decision in the near future.
