In brief

The conflict, occurring over twelve intense days, showcased how digital platforms have transformed into arenas for propaganda, making AI-driven misinformation central to military strategies.

The significant military engagements were paralleled by a strategic blitz of disinformation, illustrating the evolving landscape of modern warfare.During the tumultuous period of warfare between Israel and Iran, both nations aggressively manipulated social media to influence public perception and sway the conflict's outcome. Numerous reports indicated that in the lead-up to crucial military strikes, disinformation campaigns began to proliferate online, including eerily timed social media posts aimed at misdirecting Iranian citizens. On June 23, the airstrike targeting Evin Prison in Tehran was preceded by posts in Persian, calling upon the public to gather at the prison, which notoriously houses political detainees. Shortly after the strike, videos purported to show the action at Evin Prison circulated on platforms like X and Telegram. However, these videos were crafted to serve as a strategic disinformation tool, a façade employed by Israeli intelligence to obscure the actual events.According to researchers monitoring these developments, the conflict displayed unprecedented levels of information warfare. The rapid spread of misleading content, further augmented by artificial intelligence, occurred almost instantaneously alongside military actions, illustrating the seamless integration of digital misinformation within modern military tactics. This new chapter of warfare raises critical concerns about the ethical implications of using social media as a weapon, especially given its widespread influence in shaping public discourse during such sensitive conflicts. The Israel-Iran conflict has demonstrated that battles are no longer confined to physical terrains but have expanded into cyberspace, where narratives can be weaponized to incite emotions, mislead populations, and ultimately impact the realities of war itself.
