In brief
In a crucial escalation ahead of peace talks, Ukraine executed one of its most extensive drone strikes against Russia, targeting Moscow and grinding airport operations to a halt. The conflict remains unresolved, with calls for a truce echoing in light of increasing casualties.
Ukraine has carried out a substantial drone assault across Russian territory, marking one of its largest strikes since the beginning of the ongoing conflict. Early Tuesday morning, the drone barrage targeted various locations, including a notable focus on the Moscow region, which has heightened tensions as peace talks loom. The Russian Ministry of Defense reported intercepting 337 drones, with 91 aimed specifically at the capital. The mayor of Moscow, Sergei Sobyanin, declared the attack the largest against the city since the war erupted, resulting in two fatalities and injuring 14 individuals according to Russian officials. The strikes damaged residential buildings in Moscow, causing significant destruction, while all four international airports servicing the vast metropolitan area were forced to pause operations. In response to the escalating situation, Ukraine has suggested an immediate air truce, whereby it would cease long-range assaults into Russian territory in exchange for a similar commitment from Moscow. This proposition has received backing from several European nations, such as France, as a preliminary strategy to foster mutual trust ahead of formal discussions aimed at resolving an ongoing conflict that has seen extensive military casualties on both sides.
