In brief
Authorities in the Philippines have announced that Elliot Eastman, a 26-year-old American living in Mindanao, is believed to have been murdered during his kidnapping. As per the Philippine National Police, a suspect in custody provided information indicating that Eastman likely died on the same day he was taken by armed men.
Eastman, originally from Vermont, was reportedly abducted from his home in the coastal town of Sibuco on October 17 by individuals posing as police officers. Witness accounts suggest that he resisted the abduction but was shot in the leg and subsequently in the stomach before the assailants fled with him on a boat. Although his body has not been recovered, police suspect that the kidnappers disposed of it in the sea.Elliot had been living in the Philippines since May and shared his experiences through videos on social media, detailing his daily life in the region. He often reflected on the differences between his life as a foreigner and the local culture, even acknowledging the area's reputation as unwelcoming for tourists. His kidnapping was reported by his father-in-law, who witnessed the abduction, describing how masked men forcibly entered Eastman’s residence. Despite a decrease in such incidents over recent years, the threat posed by armed groups means that U.S. officials continue to advise caution for American citizens traveling to the region. The police have apprehended four men in connection to the case, with additional suspects still being pursued. As the investigation unfolds, the local community is left grieving the loss of a young man who had embraced their way of life.
